Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Windstream Communications—two Arkansas based companies—are issuing a joint plea with us on behalf of Arkansas children. School will be starting soon; teachers are preparing lesson plans, but thousands of students will arrive at school unprepared to learn. In Arkansas 169,435 children live in poverty and thousands actually arrive at school having had little or nothing to eat since their school lunch the day before.

Since 1995, Arkansas Rice Depot has been working hard to put nutritional food into the hands of needy Arkansas schoolchildren through our “Food For Kids” program. Today we reach about half the schools around the state with this program. But we need your help to double that total this year. That’s our goal—all 1,101 state public schools. Wal-Mart and Windstream have partnered with us to help provide funds so we can meet this goal.

Wal-Mart and Windstream Corporations have joined together to challenge Arkansas companies and citizens to rise to the challenge of donating the needed funds and food to reach all students in Arkansas who arrive at school unable to learn due to hunger.

They have each pledged $30,000 to match donations to the Food For Kids program of Arkansas Rice Depot during the next 30 days. We believe with their support and yours that the $60,000 challenge will not only be met, but exceeded!

This challenge campaign will end on September 8th when food/donation drives will be held at many Wal-Mart Stores throughout the state.

The Wal-Mart-Windstream challenge in partnership with Arkansas Rice Depot is a first step in uniting “Arkansas companies working together to end hunger for thousands of children in Arkansas.”
