Food For Seniors
Sometimes, the money runs out before the month ends.
Arkansas Rice Depot doesn’t think that senior citizens living in poverty should have to choose between food and medicine. So each month, we send a group of volunteers to visit with homebound seniors and deliver a box of groceries and personal care items. Many times, that supply helps make ends meet for an impoverished senior who would otherwise be hungry.
Fast Facts
- Many seniors subsist on as little as $79/month after they pay their rent and utilities
- Each month, volunteers deliver a 50-lb supply of food to over 60 senior citizens in Central Arkansas
- Senior citizen deliveries include fresh food as well as personal care items
- Deliveries are often made by the same volunteer each month, providing homebound seniors living in poverty with much-need contact with the outside world
"At 87, Ms. Alberta misses the good taste of ripe peaches and juicy apples. She stretches her small budget as far as she can, but it doesn’t run to extras. Sometimes, it barely covers essentials. Her Food For Seniors delivery each month includes some tasty fresh fruit, and the volunteers who deliver to Ms. Alberta sit awhile to listen to her great stories of the good old days. Says Ms. Alberta, “The Rice Depot program is a wonderful idea. I call it a blessing!"
Ms. Lillie cares for her 12 year old grandson and herself, all while wheelchair-bound. When her food stamps run out, she relies on her delivery from Arkansas Rice Depot each month. We’re sure to put in some kid-friendly goodies for Ms. Lillie’s grandson, and our delivery volunteers cherish their visits with Ms. Lillie each month.
